Welcome to the backyard. I have news. I did it! I finished my book, The Help.
I'm telling you....that Kathryn Stockett is a WRITER!!!
For those of you who are still planning to read it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I read it out loud, using my most Southern,...Georgia Southern,...drawl,....with hubby hanging on every word at times. We giggled, and laughed out loud too! {Although he might not admit it!} ^_^
I got mad at times, got inspired at other times, and went down memory lane a number of times, thinking about my own childhood growing up in the South. It wasn't Mississippi, but the South, unfortunately, was the South back in those days. Racism was rampant...and not discussed as such in mixed company.
I have my favorite characters in the book, as most people probably will when they read it. But strangely, even the not so attractive characters taught me something about myself! I love Aibileen!! She had a kind of quiet, matter of fact, kill 'em with love kind of way with herself that reminded me of my relatives growing up. And the relationship with herself and Mae Mobley will at times make you want to wet yourself laughing, and other times...sob baby soft tears. At least it did me.
If you thoughtfully read it, you may never be able to claim ignorance at the way the world works again,...or want to eat pie! {you'll have to read it to find out what that means! ^_^} From now on the color of someone's skin may not be the first thing you notice about them, if that has ever happened to you...and you can be honest about it! And you may find yourself a little quicker to champion things for the 'little guy'.
What I want to do right now is tell you, in detail, some of the best things that happened.and Oooooo Whee!! there's some doozies!! ^_^ But I won't! I'll just tell you to read it. And we can chat about it by 'direct message' on Twitter or something when you're done!!! :-))
Okay, I'm off to get some breakfast...NOT pie! No, it's going to be a little while before I get excited about eating pie again!! ^_^
{By the way, hubby will be guest blogging here tomorrow, so I'll be back on Monday with something really good for you!!} Have a good day everybody! :-)
Have you read any good books lately?
Have you quietly sat all alone
and thumbed through the word-filled pages,
of a story your mind made it's own?
Have you drifted away to a place
where you almost could smell the sea?
Where you found yourself so out of sorts
that you didn't quite know who to be?
Has a character brought you to tears;
Made you think of a time long since gone?
Have you been so enthralled with a writer
that their every word formed a bond?
Have you learned new things for your future;
Remembered some things from your past;
because of great words put on paper
that made all the memories last?
Have you been so excited to finish
that you restrained the desire to look?
Have you told all your friends about it?
Well, it sounds like you've read a good book!
can I just get an audio copy of you reading it with your southern accent?! :]
ReplyDeleteHollie, Ha! Ha! Hmmm...wonder if Icould get somebody to give me permission to do that?!! Talk about fun, for an old Southern talker like me!! ^_^
ReplyDeleteShoot, they'd have to pay you! :]
ReplyDeleteNot much....I like the whole idea of talking that much IN CHARACTER!! LOL
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read this one! I'll have to wait till it's out on paperback, or look for it used! (Yep, I'm a tightwad!) Thanks for sharing your excitement about it with us.
ReplyDeleteCinLynn, Too bad you don't live right around the corner!! I'd let you read it now. But it doesn't belong to me. It was passed to me by a friend and I have to give it back. {Yeah, I'm a tight wad too! ^_^} But actually, I think I'll get it because I'm sure I'll read it again in the future. My sister is going to the library on Monday to get it to read! You could go that route too Bead! :-)
ReplyDeleteI read "The Help" in 2009 and it was by far one of my most favorite books of the year. A great recommendation of a book with meaningful messages.
ReplyDeleteDebbie, I love the colorful way you express yourself. Your should write book reviews!
I hope your Thanksgiving holiday was filled with warmth and joy.
Julie, YAY! Somebody else that knows what I'm talking about!! I had never even heard of it until recently!! I'm so glad my friend loaned it to me though. It's such a good book...which you know! :-)...As to the book review thing, that would mean I'd have the time or the wherewithal to read and review a lot of books on a regular basis! I'm REAL particular about my reading material because I have so much of it already....and I like to do a lot of talking too! ^_^ So, I'll stick to reviews on occasion...No pressure!! :-)
ReplyDeleteI read that book this past summer and loved it! I'm hardly ever without a book and during my breaks at work, that's what you'll find in my hands...a friend at work told me the author is a friend of her sister-in-law..they grew up in that southern town. I know the pie story only it didn't stop me from eating any (unfortunately) this weekend...since I made them I felt safe! Great book choice!
ReplyDeleteYaya, Great! Another person who knows why I love this book!! Seems like everybody knew about it a long time before me! Why didn't somebody tell me?!! ^_^ And wow! How great to have a friend with such a close connection to the author! I'd love to bend her ear about what she's writing next!!...Oh Yeah, I had a piece of coconut custard pie today. Figured that was safe!! LOL
